Navigating Change: Propelling the Use of Hydrogen Fuel in the Maritime Industry

Time: 14:50 - 15:30
Date: 3 July 2024

Synopsis

Maritime vessels produce around 5% of the UK’s domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions (which is more than the domestic rail and bus emissions combined). 97% of global fleet vessels are fuelled by heavy fuel oil (HFO) or marine diesel. Following the Clean Maritime Plan published in 2019, the Department for Transport has announced Round 4 of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC). The UK government has committed to £34 million worth of funding for the fourth round, which brings the total investment into CMDC to £129 million.

  • Long-term goals for reducing maritime emissions, and discuss the policies, technologies, and best practices to meet sustainability targets
  • The development of hydrogen fuel cells, storage technologies, and other innovations that enable the use of green hydrogen in maritime transportation
  • The initiatives and investments required to establish a robust network of hydrogen refuelling stations to support hydrogen-powered ships
  • The importance of collaboration among shipbuilders, energy providers, and port authorities to facilitate the adoption of green hydrogen in the shipping industry
